Audi drops images of Urban Sportback and Spyder concept cars

August 29th, 2011 by Darren Cottingham

In what begun as just a few sketches, Audi is now showing off a load computer generated images of its two-seat Urban Sportback and Spyder concept models. The extreme concept machines will make their world premiere at the upcoming 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany.

Little is known about the concepts so far but Audi says they are pure-electric powered and are not descended from any previous Audi model. The development of the concepts is based on the principles of lightweight construction, efficiency and reduction.

The tiny concepts are certainly striking with their exposed 21-inch wheel wheels and a body size of just 3,200mm long, 1,700mm wide and a mere 1,200mm tall. In terms of power, motivation comes from two e-tron electric motors that draw energy from a lithium-ion battery. The body is made from a lightweight mix of carbon fibre-reinforced polymer and aluminum to construct the two models. Continue reading “Audi drops images of Urban Sportback and Spyder concept cars” »

Audi R8 GT Spyder let off its chain – expect 418kW

June 7th, 2011 by Darren Cottingham

Audi has let the latest version of its hardcore R8 GT supercar off the chain with details and images released of the new convertible version. It was only two months ago that Audi announced it would build a top tier roadster version of the R8 and already it appears to be completed.

Like the coupe variant, the R8 GT Spyder will use a tweaked version of the regular R8 V10’s 5.2 litre engine, boosting power to 418kW with 540Nm of torque.

The power is sent to all four wheels through Audi’s R tronic sequential automatically-controlled manual transmission and the well-proven quattro all-wheel-drive system.

Performance claims peg the R8 GT Spyder at hitting 100km/h in just 3.8 seconds, compared to 3.6 for the hardtop R8 GT and 3.9 seconds for the regular R8 5.2 FSI V10.

A range of weight-saving measures help the R8 GT Spyder achieve its performance figures with the special model weighing 85kg less than the standard version. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic chips in for shedding the kilos and makes up the cover for the soft top, the rear spoiler and the rear bumper. However, the most effective weight-saving measure is the seats, which drop off 32kg. Continue reading “Audi R8 GT Spyder let off its chain – expect 418kW” »

The Hulme CanAm Spyder has been named in honour of Denny Hulme, New Zealand’s only Formula One World Champion and double CanAm Champion. It’s exclusive with only 20 examples to be built and is designed to give the driver an experience as close as possible, to driving a Formula One car legally on the road. Tipping the scales at just 980kg the CanAm uses high-tech carbon/titanium/kevlar composite chassis and composite body panels. Porsche announces pricing and details for 918 Spyder Hybrid Supercar

March 22nd, 2011 by Darren Cottingham

It will still be at least two years before Porsche’s new 918 Spyder hybrid supercar reaches production, but that’s not stopping the German carmaker from putting a price tag on it and opening the order book.

The 918 Spyder is to be the most expensive model ever built by Porsche with European prices starting from €645,000 ($1.24m NZD). That’s a large chunk of change to say the least but for the money buyer’s will get the latest hybrid tech and the natural successor to the iconic Carerra GT.

Production of the 918 Spyder will take place at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen plant in Germany starting from September 18, 2013, with first deliveries to commence in November 2013. Porsche plans to limit production of the two-seater model to no more than 918 units worldwide.

The 918 Spyder is closely modeled after the concept study seen at last year’s Geneva Motor Show. However, the production version will not have a full open-top look, instead it will go with removable roof panels that can be stowed in the front luggage compartment. Other differences from the concept include the addition of exterior mirrors and the removal of the side exhaust tail pipes. Can-Am Spyder Experience returns to New Zealand

February 25th, 2011 by Darren Cottingham

The Spyder Experience travelling road show offers motoring enthusiasts the opportunity to enjoy a lengthy test ride on the unique, three-wheeled Can-Am Spyder, and it returns to New Zealand in March and April.

The Spyder roadster looks like a three-wheeled, Y-configuration motorcycle with two wheels in the front and one in the rear.

“A Spyder is a fantastic machine for those who have always liked the idea of open road touring on a motorbike but, for whatever reason, don’t like the way bikes need to be leaned into corners,” says Richard Shaw, New Zealand manager for Can-Am Spyder manufacturers Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP).

“The Spyder delivers a totally different riding sensation. It has a more stable ride with its ATV-like chassis with the single rear driving wheel and two wheels in front for steering. With its 990cc V-Twin Rotax engine, ABS and power-steering, the Spyder is powerful and sophisticated to ride.”

Shaw notes: “The Spyder Experience is a great way for people to try out a Spyder in a friendly, helpful environment. Even if you have no motorbike riding experience, don’t worry. With a short period of tuition anyone can safely ride a Spyder – they are different, but not difficult to master – and we’ll cover some of the technical details that make the Spyder so special. After our group ride around a mix of urban and open roads, we’ll return to base to enjoy a coffee and share your thoughts about your Spyder ride.” Continue reading “Can-Am Spyder Experience returns to New Zealand” »

Images leaked of the Audi e-Tron Spyder

September 20th, 2010 by Darren Cottingham

Supposedly images of the first sketches seen here could be that of the oft-rumored Audi e-Tron Spyder. There is high speculation as to the reliability as nothing but these images have been leaked.

As you’d expect, this convertible creature appears to be based on the design of the e-Tron Concept shown at the Detroit Auto Show this year. However there has been no word on the powerplant involved, but it is headed for production for 2012 and you would not expect many more that 1,000 units to be made.

Check out the gallery for a closer look at this potential machine.
