Toyota has announced that it will be recalling around 550,000 vehicles globally for a potentially faulty crank shaft pulley.
Toyota NZ has advised that just under 1,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles are affected by the precautionary engine component recall.
Toyota New Zealand General Manager Customer Services, Spencer Morris, says the affected part is the crankshaft pulley used on the 3 litre V6 1MZ-FE engine and 3.3 litre V6 3MZ-FE engine used in some 2004/2005 Toyota Camry, Highlander, Harrier, and Estima models. This engine was also used in the Lexus RX range during the same years.
The pulley drives the belt which operates the power steering, alternator and air conditioner. In rare cases, the inner and outer pulley parts may start to separate. If left unchecked, the pulley may eventually stop driving the belt, leading to an increase in steering effort.

Toyota New Zealand has announced the recall of 1300 Avensis vehicles. Toyota dealerships require the cars to replace the fuel pipe after receiving advice from Toyota Japan that some pipes may have been thinner than specified when they were fitted to the new car.
Paul Carroll, General Manager of After Sales for Toyota New Zealand, says pipes which are thinner than specified could crack over time and eventually leak fuel.
“Only 119 cases of defective pipes have been found in the 1.3 million Avensis worldwide, but Toyota is taking a precautionary approach and replacing the pipes at no charge to the owners.”
The owners of Toyota Avensis sold new in New Zealand from 2003 to 2008 will be notified by letter and asked to contact their nearest Toyota dealer.

Wounded automaker Toyota has taken another knock with the announcement of another massive recall. The voluntary safety recall affects 1.53 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles globally, with the U.S. making up around 740,000 of that total and about 600,000 vehicles affected in the company’s home market of Japan.
The models covered under the recall may have a faulty master cylinder seal in the braking system that could leak fluid, triggering a warning lamp and/or potentially resulting in reduced braking performance. In the States the Toyota models included in the recall include the 2005-2006 Avalon and 2004-2006 Highlander (non-hybrid only), while Lexus models affected are the 2006 model year GS, IS and RX cars and crossovers.
So far it’s unknown if any New Zealand spec Toyotas are affected by the recall.

Unfortunately one of the cruel truths of the mechanical industry is that rust fears no machine. Even the most expensive piece of metal can fall to the ill effects of iron oxide, and it seems Bentley is no more different than the rest. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has just issued a recall for Arnage, Azure and Brooklands models manufactured between the years 2007-2009.
As unusual as a recall might be, the retractable ‘Flying B’ on the hood may rust and corrode over time and lose its ability to retract in the event of a crash. NHTSA have pointed out that this could be dangerous for pedestrians for obvious reasons.
In total, 596 units are affected by the recall (the retractable Flying B is an optional accessory) and Bentley has said that it will replace the faulty hood ornament free of charge.

The internet has been ablaze recently with images and videos of new Ferarri 458s on fire. In a rather slow response Ferrari has officially issued a recall of the 458 Italia.
According to the automaker, an adhesive used to attach a heat shield under the rear guard can ignite with high temperatures which can start a larger fire in the nearby engine bay. There’s been five reported cases in total, a number verified by Ferrari directly to Car and SUV.
To combat the problem Ferrari has designed a new heat shield that attaches with rivets, negating the need for the adhesive. Ferrari 458 owners are urged to call a dealer to schedule an appointment for the free fix.
There are eight 458s in Australia, but New Zealand has yet to have one delivered.

Toyota New Zealand has announced that kiwi Corolla owners are unaffected by a recall of late-model Corolla vehicles in the US.
Over in the States, approximately 1.13 million vehicles are affected by a problem which could cause the 1ZZ-FE 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine to stall. Three accidents have been reported in America, so far, though Toyota hasn’t confirmed that these incidents were indeed caused by this engine stalling issue.
Here in NZ, Paul Carroll, General Manager of After Sales for Toyota New Zealand, says no Corollas in New Zealand — including Japanese imports — are fitted with the electronic control module used in the US market.
“The potentially faulty electronic control module used the US market is supplied by a different manufacturer than those in New Zealand vehicles. No vehicles here are affected and owners can have confidence in their Corollas.”
Mr Carroll says Toyota in the US will replace the control modules on affected vehicles, which could malfunction and cause harsh gear changes, or in the worst case, stalling.

Toyota New Zealand says drivers of the Land Cruiser here in New Zealand are not affected by an overseas recall of LC100 models.
Paul Carroll, General Manager After Sales, said “The Land Cruiser is an iconic off road vehicle used all over New Zealand. The version sold here was not specified with the active steering system used in vehicles being recalled, so owners here have no cause for concern.”
Toyota is working with the New Zealand Transport Agency to identify if any used imported Land Cruisers from the affected production period are on the roads here.
“If there are, the owners will be contacted and the vehicles repaired free of charge,” Mr Carroll said.

Over the ditch Holden has just begun a recall of its Commodore Ute range, because of a faulty latch that can lead to the tailgate opening if impacted outwards with sufficient strength.
A official statement issued by Holden reads:
“A condition can occur under specific operating conditions where the tailgate may unlatch when impacted rearwards with sufficient energy by unsecured objects placed in the rear cargo tray.”
The recall comes after Holden received two separate reports of latch failures and it will affect 34,432 utes in the VE range.
In Australia Holden has confirmed that the process of contacting owners is already underway, and it recommends that, for now, all loads should be firmly secured within the tray, away from the tailgate.
Replacing the faulty latches is a half hour job, although repair times are subject to parts availability.
The recall affects all utes in the following ISOVIN range:
