Toyota: 2014 Hilux Edge 4×2 TD

September 30th, 2014 by Ian Ferguson

The limited edition Toyota Hilux Edge is without a doubt, the full size toolbox on wheels, or as I’d like to refer to it, a useful 5.26 metre length of 4×2.

Seen here in Velocity Red, several hand and power tool brands would want this as their team colour,  although you can also choose from Glacier White, the usual Charcoal Grey, and Ink, as in Black.

Many would see it as the glossed up Tradie’s vehicle of choice, however in New Zealand it wears the crown of the ultimate Utility and it’s a top seller to boot.

Captiva 7 Active HR F

Captiva 7 Active LRKeeping a model fresh and interesting is always a challenge for a manufacturer and even though the Captiva 7 SUV has been a great ( and very successful) sales weapon in the Holden arsenal, it too is not exempt from such marketing efforts. Land Rover Discovery 4 Black Limited Edition 2013 Review

February 20th, 2014 by Darren Cottingham

At $130,250 I’m as likely to go roving over the land as I am to wear my favourite business shirt while doing judo. However, with the limited off-roading I dare do in the Discovery 4 Black, which consisted of a verified ‘safe’ bit of beach and some fairly non-challenging rocks, I can confirm that it has abilities that normal cars don’t have on terrain that will throw you around and pin you to the mat.

land-rover-discovery-4-black-front-interiorFive Terrain Response modes help the air suspension adapt to the requirements. Leave it in the standard mode and you’ll get through most obstacles, but there are options for low gear ratios, raising the suspension up to 125mm for a total of 310mm for extreme off-road, and lowering it by 50mm to allow easier entry for passengers. Bashing through the rocks? Put it in the rock crawl mode which gives lighter braking. In ruts and mud? Put it in the mud mode for better ground clearance. On the beach? Put it in sand mode to give better launch control to stop you digging yourself a hole. Continue reading “Land Rover Discovery 4 Black Limited Edition 2013 Review” »

Mazda releases end of line RX-8 Spirit R final edition

October 10th, 2011 by Darren Cottingham

Rotary fans worldwide took the news hard that Mazda was killing off its RX-8 without word of a successor – but now there is a small silver lining.

Mazda has just announced that it is releasing a final special edition of its RX-8 which could be the final rotary production cars ever built. Named the RX-8 Spirit R, this very collectable special edition will be limited to just 1,000 units, with sales in the Japanese domestic market only.

The Spirit R nameplate is familiar being also used for the final edition of the RX-7 and the RX-8 version will be sold in two variants – a six-speed manual version based on the RS model and the other with a six-speed auto based on the Type E model.

After it launches the Spirit R and the auto-only Type G will be the only RX-8 models on sale in Japan with production ending fully on June 12th, 2012.

Naturally, the Spirit R receives some special touches like an exclusive Recaro bucket seats and bronze 19-inch alloy wheels. Special equipment includes a sport suspension set-up, larger brakes with red calipers, new front headlights and Spirit R badges. March 8th, 2011 by Darren Cottingham

What was once the Whitbread Round the World yacht race has become the Volvo Ocean Race and to celebrate its sponsorship of this yachting event Volvo is releasing special edition models.

The nautical themed Volvos will only be on sale in Europe with the V60, XC60 and XC70 all receiving treatment. The cars will be available to order starting in April, with the first deliveries expected to take place in July.

The special logos don’t stop with the seats, the door panels and cargo covers also get the Ocean Race treatment, with special script and stitching. Maserati gets its own Alfa Romeo MiTo

January 29th, 2010 by Darren Cottingham

Alfa Romeo is building a special version of its Mito and the only way to get a drive is to own a Maserati with the unique version of Mito being produced exclusively for Maserati dealers to use as loan cars.

The special-purpose cars will be styled in Maserati Blu Oceano, and fitted with the new 1.4 125 kW MultiAir turbocharged engine which is set to arrive in New Zealand later this year, making this special Alfa Romeo Mito available to local Maserati dealers.

The cars will be distinguished by their unique color and  also by two other exclusive features: the “Limited Edition” plaque on the dashboard, and the kick plate made from specially treated aluminum, bearing the words Alfa Romeo for Maserati.

This unique Alfa Romeo Mito will also have a series of high-end details, supplied as standard: Pelle Frau upholstery, automatic dual-zone climate control, leather steering wheel complete with radio and telephone controls, bi-xenon headlights, SatNav, and a hands-free Blue&Me system including a USB port. 18′ alloy wheels, rear spoiler, rear bumper and aluminum pedals are all fitted as standard. All the cars will come with the DNA suspension system, and electronic shock absorber control system.

It’s a tidy machine, but will Maserati owners worldwide be deliberately blowing their engines just to get a ride in one? Possibly not.
